County welcomes 'The Impressions' this weekend

Thursday

The League of Women Voters of Georgia will host a candidates forum for anyone campaigning in the upcoming Board of Education District 1 special election on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 6:30 p.m., at the Lovejoy Community Center, 11622 Hastings Bridge Road, Lovejoy.

Saturday

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, "The Impressions" will perform on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m., at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center, 2530 Mt. Zion Parkway, Jonesboro. The group will perform several hits, including "People, Get Ready," "I'm So Proud," "It's All Right," and "Gypsy Woman." Performances by Rhythm and Blues singer Larissa Holiday, and jazz group "Rhapsody N Blues" are also scheduled. Also, there will be a youth talent competition. Tickets cost $25 for general admission; $35 for reserved seating, and $75 for V.I.P. seating. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster at (404) 249-6400, or through the Performing Arts Center box office at (770) 473-2875. A portion of the proceeds will fund scholarships for Clayton County students.

Tuesday

Clayton State University's School of Graduate Studies will hold an open house on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m., in room 201 of the university's Harry S. Downs Center.

Oct. 18

The National Archives and Record Administration's Southeast Region office will host a Fall Genealogy Fair and Pie Contest on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m., to 4 p.m., at the archives, which is located at 5780 Jonesboro Road, Morrow. Topics to be addressed include tracing immigrant ancestors; searching World War I draft records; court records; searching files on the Internet; how to determine if an African-American individual has a Native-American ancestor; how to search family history and genealogy records at the Atlanta History Center; how to find family members in National Archives resources; preservation and restoration efforts at Oakland Cemetery, and taking care of family archives and family photographs. The Lovejoy High School Cheerleading Squad will hold a "Communitywide Yard Sale" on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7 a.m., at the high school, which is located at 1587 McDonough Road, in Hampton. For more information, contact Kimberly Alexander at (404)931-4221.

Oct. 22-23

Clayton State University's Health Services department will offer flu shots to members of the community on Wednesday, Oct. 22, and Thursday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m., to 3 p.m., in the James M. Baker University Center. The cost for a flu shot is $15 for Clayton State students; $17 for faculty and staff, and $23 for the general public.

The Clayton County Board of Education will hold its October Work Session on Monday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m., at the district's Central Administration complex, 1058 Fifth Ave., Jonesboro.

Notes

Kendrick Middle School received $61.21 in September from the Target Corporation's Take Charge of Education program. Through the program, parents, teachers and community members can use their REDcard to make purchases and 1 percent of the purchase amounts will be donated to their designated school of choice. Kendrick Middle School has received $653.78 through the Take Charge of Education program since 1997.

Ongoing

Scholars Academy State Charter Elementary School, 6390 Church St., in Riverdale, still has space for students for the current school year, and has ongoing enrollment. There are no tuition costs, and parents need to bring items such as photo identification; birth certificates; proof of residency, and completed immunization forms to enroll their children in the school. The Clayton County Public Library system offers many services to students, including tutoring programs for those who speak either English or Spanish, and online practice tests and electronic test preparation books for the SAT, GED, ASVAB, and TOEFFL exams.
