The Clayton County Board of Health (CCBOH) will host its annual Health and Wellness Day this Saturday, April 4, from 10 a.m., to 1 p.m., at its headquarters, located at 1117 Battlecreek Road in Jonesboro.
The event will bring together 37 different agencies to provide free wellness information, and health screenings, to the general public.
Jamie Carlington, public information officer for BOH programs, said that 500 to 600 people are expected this year. She said patrons will be able to receive services, such as dental screenings, blood pressure checks, meal planning suggestions, exercise tips, and information about quitting tobacco products.
"Unfortunately, during these tough economic times, many families are without health care insurance and not sure where to turn to find the health care assistance that is needed," said Carlington. "Saturday's health fair will serve a dual purpose in providing some basic health screenings, as well as educate the public on the variety of services and programs offered by the CCBOH."
Carlington said participants in this year's Health and Wellness Day include Amerigroup, Walgreens, Clayton State University, the American Cancer Society, the Clayton County Sheriff's Office, the Clayton County police and fire departments, and the University of Phoenix.
The women's health and children's health departments of the CCBOH will also will be available to help people learn how to stem chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart problems.
"We're trying to offer a little bit for everyone," said Carlington. For more information about the program, contact Ruth Dobson at (404) 366-6230.
