Clayton County Police have identified the 1-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a car earlier this week outside a local church as Jewell Alston Nasir, of College Park.
The incident happened Monday afternoon outside the House of Prayer for All Nations World Wide Ministries church, located at 737 Veterans Parkway, in Jonesboro.
The driver of the vehicle, Elise Gillison, of Riverdale, told police she locked the door of the church before getting into her car, and the child was supposed to be in the building at the time, according to Clayton County Police spokesman Officer Kevin Hughes.
Gillison told police that when she backed out of the parking space, she felt a bump, then got out and saw the child on the ground, Hughes said. He said church members then rushed the boy to Southern Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Hughes said Gillison is a close relative of the boy, but did not know how the two are related.
Minister Rachel Todd, who was at the church Tuesday afternoon, said, "I came down here to clean up, and to pray." Todd, who said she has been a member of the church for seven years, and a minister there since 2005, said she was not familiar with the child nor his family.
Hughes said police are still investigating the incident, and no charges have been filed in the child's death.
