The Clayton State Laker women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Saturday at the Clayton County Tennis Center. The 11th-ranked Lakers opened with a thrilling 5-2 victory over Augusta State in the quarterfinals, but dropped a 5-1 decision against top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic in the semifinals.
The split puts Clayton State 10-6 overall on the 2009 season.
The match against Augusta State got off to an inauspicious start for the Lakers. Clayton State dropped two of its three doubles matches against the Jaguars. However, the Lakers won four singles matches to seal the victory.
Viktoriya Semyrodenko pulled off a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Augusta State's Fernanda Chiaparini at No. 2 singles, while Marie-Laure Cercelletti knocked off Augusta State's Marina Ferreria 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. The Lakers' Selma Hidass was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 4 against the Jaguars' Bianca Machado, and Evelin Csizi won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 over Augusta State's Giovan Fensterseifer.
The Lakers' lone victory against Armstrong Atlantic was in doubles. Hidass and Cercelletti downed the Lady Pirate team of Kathleen Henry and Tina Ronel 8-6.
Clayton State now waits for an at-large bid to the 2009 NCAA Division II National Tournament, which begins on May 7.
