Clark-Atlanta University's drumline is scheduled to perform at the anti-gang "Drumline for Peace" rally this weekend. The event will take place Saturday, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Sports & Fitness Factory (formerly Hoops and Fitness), located at 8557 Tara Boulevard, in Jonesboro.
Event coordinator and former Clayton County teacher Valerie Hamilton said she organized the Drumline for Peace in response to the gang-related deaths of four Clayton County high school students last fall. "The goal of this event is to encourage students and teens to strive for peace and non-violence," Hamilton said in a written statement. In addition to Clark-Atlanta's drumline, Hamilton said the marching band from College Park-based Banneker High School will also perform at the rally. Hamilton said attendees are being asked to make a $5 donation at the door, to help fund scholarships for siblings of children who are killed in gang-related violence.
