Kenneth R. Brown

Mr. Kenneth R. Brown, age 72, of McDonough passed away Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. He was born in Jackson County, where he graduated from Maysville High School. He was in the U.S. Army Reserve prior to being called to active duty in Berlin, Germany, during the Cold War Crisis. He married Louisia Elizabeth "Beth" Underwood (formerly of Blue Ridge, Ga.) Sept. 1, 1962. He went on to graduate from Woodrow Wilson College of Law with a Master of Law degree on June 13, 1969. He began his private law practice in November 1971. His work was his ministry, he loved helping others and had a heart for the Asian community.

He is survived by wife, Louisia Elizabeth "Beth" Underwood; son, Kevin R. Brown of Flagler Beach, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Kenda and David L. Meeks of Marietta; grandchildren, Matthew Meeks, Alyssa Meeks, Kristen Meeks and Abigail Gibbons; sister, Eloise Slaton of Austell; sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Don Truluck of Watkinsville; sister-in-law, Sandra Brown of Carrollton, along with numerous other family members and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 8 at the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro Worship Center, with the Rev. Irvin Pearre and the Rev. Hinton Harris officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. The family will meet at the graveside at Copper Ridge Memorial Gardens in Blue Ridge at 4 p.m., for interment. The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Travis Vernon Burdette

Mr. Travis Vernon Burdette, age 78, of Riverdale passed away Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009. He was born June 6, 1931 in Fayetteville, son of the late James Asbury Burdette and Rosie Ethel Spears Burdette. He was also preceded in death by the mother of his children, Emma Lee Burdette, and two brothers. Mr. Burdette served in the National Guard. He was a retired truck driver with Consolidated Freight Lines and a member of the Teamsters Union. He was Baptist by faith.

He is survived by his wife, Jena Burdette; step-daughter, Connie and her husband Gary Phagan; sons, Butch and his wife Jenny Burdette, Michael Burdette, Jimmy and his wife Susie Burdette; grandson, Matthew Mauldin; granddaughter, Shanda Mauldin; grandson, Christopher Phagan; seven more grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Katherine Robinson and Ruby Haase.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, Aug. 7 from 2 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be Saturday, Aug. 8 at 1 p.m., in the Rosehaven Chapel with Elder Lee Royer officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Gardens in Jonesboro.
