A McDonough man was being held in the Clayton County Jail Monday, charged with the death of a motorcycle passenger in a wreck that occurred early Saturday morning on Riverdale Road.

Lamar Jayson Johnson, 18, is charged with vehicular homicide, following too closely, leaving the scene of an accident, DUI, and possession of alcohol by a minor, according to Officer Kevin Hughes, a Clayton County Police spokesperson.

Johnson was traveling on Riverdale Road in a Ford van around 2:30 a.m., Saturday, when he struck the back of a motorcycle that was traveling on Riverdale Road near Flat Shoals Road, Hughes said.

A female passenger, whose identity was not available, was pronounced dead at the scene. Hughes said the South Carolina woman was in town for the National Biker's Round-up held last week at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton.

"After he [Johnson] struck the motorcycle, he continued driving on Riverdale Road, and struck another vehicle near ... Garden Walk Boulevard," Hughes said.

Johnson tried to flee on foot after hitting the vehicle, Hughes said. "Pedestrians and others who witnessed the first incident, detained him," Hughes said. "Once the police got there, we discovered he was under the influence of alcohol."

The driver of the motorcycle, Thomas Edward Brown, 35, of Riverdale, was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries, he said.

Both persons who were traveling on the motorcycle were wearing helmets, according to Hughes.
