Today

Clayton State University will hold its second annual "Laker Hall Move-In Day" on Thursday, Aug. 13, from 8 a.m., to 4 p.m., for new students who will be living in the school's Laker Hall residence complex during the 2009-2010 school year. Friday

Clayton State University will hold its fourth annual New Student Convocation ceremony on Friday, Aug. 14, from 4 p.m., to 5 p.m., in the university's Spivey Hall. The ceremony is held each year to welcome Clayton State's newest students to the school community. The keynote address will be given by Felicia Joy, who was previously a spokesperson for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The Clayton County Board of Education will hold its August work session on Monday, Aug. 24, at 6:30 p.m., at the Clayton County Public Schools Central Administration Complex, which is located at 1058 Fifth Ave., in Jonesboro.

The U.S. Army National Guard recently announced that Spec. Niki L. Lowe, a 2000 graduate of Riverdale High School, has completed the five-week Warrior Transition Course at Fort Sill, which is located in Lawton, Okla. During the course, soldiers like Lowe undergo much of the same training developed for basic combat training. To complete the course, soldiers must complete the Army Physical Fitness Test, with a minimum of 60 points in each event, M-16 weapon qualification, tactical foot marches, tactical field and situational training, and the land navigation course. Lowe is the daughter of Riverdale residents, Carrie and Tony Lowe.

The U.S. Air Force recently announced that Senior Airman Asa Oliver, IV, a 2002 graduate of North Clayton High School, has been deployed to a forward operating base in Southwest Asia to support the missions of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa. The mission of U.S. troops in Operation Horn of Africa is to detect, disrupt and defeat transnational terrorist groups in the region. The mission is also to support coalition partner efforts to deny an opportunity for the re-emergence of terrorist networks in the Horn of Africa. Oliver is a journeyman who works with heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration. He is normally assigned to the 437th Civil Engineering Squadron, Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., and has five years of military service. Oliver is the son of Ellenwood resident, Verla R. Cook, and Riverdale resident, Asa Oliver, III.

The U.S. Air Force recently announced that Airman Berell T. Venzen, a 2008 graduate of Mundy's Mill High School, graduated from an eight-week basic military training course at Lackland Air Force Base, which is located in San Antonio, Texas. During his training, Venzen studied military discipline and studies; Air Force core values, and basic warfare principles and skills. Additionally, the Community College of the Air Force awards four credits, applied toward an associate in applied science degree, to airmen who complete the basic training course. Venzen is the son of Jonesboro resident, Nicole Wright.

The Clayton County Public Library system offers many services to students, including tutoring programs for those who speak either English or Spanish, and online practice tests and electronic test preparation books for the SAT, GED, ASVAB, and TOEFFL exams.
