McDonough merchants have begun planning their autumn activities and social events.

During a Merchants Meeting this week at City Hall, Main Street McDonough Director Linda Schenk announced the upcoming Merchants Fall Harvest Open House, and the Fall Fest and Chili Cook-off on the Square.

The open house will be Oct. 23 from 10 a.m., to 9 p.m., said Schenk. Music on the Square will be provided by the Abel, Rawls and Hayes Band of Jonesboro, from 6 to 9 p.m., she said.

The event aims to encourage more pedestrians to visit the downtown businesses, and Schenk hopes strong participation will benefit merchants.

"Hopefully, the sidewalks will be packed," she said. "[This is] to get people downtown to shop - sort of an introduction to the dining establishments and the retail and service businesses."

Schenk said merchants are encouraged to set up scarecrow displays in front of their stores from Oct. 16 to Oct. 31 as part of a competition. The displays will be judged by the McDonough Arts Council, and the winner will receive free advertising for their business during the holiday season, she said.

The Oct. 24 Fall Fest and Chili Cook-off, Schenk said, will have a Southwestern theme, and will be from 11 a.m., to 8 p.m.

"It's a great season to visit, especially with the fall foliage," Schenk said. "With the leaves changing colors, breathing the crisp autumn air and shedding the summer heat makes for a delightful outing."

Chili tasting will begin at 1 p.m., and judging will be at 4 p.m. Entries in the contest must be cooked on site, but separate from the public tasting area, she said.

The judging categories will be the Three Top Favorites, the People's Choice, and Best Decorated Booth, Schenk said.

Prizes will include gift certificates for downtown McDonough merchants - $300 for first place, $250 for second place and $200 for third place. The Best Decorated Booth winner will receive a $150 gift certificate, and the People's Choice winner will receive a $100 gift certificate.

Music for the event will be provided by McDonough Rhythm Section from 5 to 8 p.m., Schenk said.
