The Clayton State Laker women's basketball team may have started its season later than most teams in the nation, but three straight victories to open the season was enough to move the Lakers up two spots in this week's USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll. The poll was released late Tuesday evening.
After holding steady at 13th last week, Clayton State moved up to 11th in this week's poll.
The Lakers, who are the highest-ranked Peach Belt Conference team, earned 387 points and are knocking at the door to move into the Top 10.
Clayton State opened the season last Wednesday with an 88-51 victory at home over Albany State, followed by a sweep at the Rollins Thanksgiving Classic by defeating Rollins 75-53 and Nova Southeastern 75-57.
Clayton State is one of three Peach Belt teams ranked in this week's poll. Francis Marion moved up four spots from 22nd to 18th, while Lander cracked the poll ranked 25th. USC Aiken received votes.
The Lakers open Peach Belt Conference play this Saturday at home against UNC Pembroke. Game time is 1:30 p.m. at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
