Mortonson steps down at Morrow

The revolving football coaching job at Morrow is open again with Larry Mortonson confirming he no longer holds the job.

In two seasons at the helm, Mortonson compiled a 1-19 record at the school. In the last 10 years, the once-proud, but now down-trodden program has gone through five coaching changes.

Reached by cellphone Wednesday evening, Mortonson referred the matter to school principal Patricia Hill. She couldn't be reached for comment.

Morrow's last winning season was 1998, when the team went 10-2. The school won the 1987 state championship under the late Bud Theodocion with much heralded wide receiver Andre Hastings, the state's player of the year following his senior season.

Morrow has produced two NFL players in C.J. Brooks and Hastings alone with 23 all-state selections.

In addition to Morrow, Mortonson also has coached at Rockdale County and Jonesboro.

Morrow played the last two season in Class AAAAA, the state's highest. Recent released Georgia High School Association re-alignment has placed the Mustangs in AAAA for the next four years.
