Early into a sting operation Friday night, Clayton County Police had already issued four citations to businesses that allegedly sold alcohol to minors, according to Lt. Tina Daniel, a public information officer for the police department.
"Within 15 minutes, four of our decoys were able to make purchases," said Daniel. "You get a citation on the first sell, and if it happens again, then, an arrest is made."
"This is an effort to ensure the safety of our citizens over the holiday season," said Clayton Police Public Information Officer GlenNeta Griffin, in a written statement.
During the sting, police sent several decoys -- all under the legal drinking age -- to various convenience stores in the county, Griffin said. The decoys attempted to purchase alcohol without showing proper identification.
Police released the names and locations of three of the four persons cited Friday. They were:
* Shyam Khanra, 43, Valero gas station, at 6720 Mt. Zion Blvd., Morrow.
* Harpreet Raina, 22, Citgo station, at 6629 Mt. Zion Blvd., Morrow.
* Vijaykumar Sharma, 46, Texaco station, at 126 Valley Hill Rd., Riverdale.
The police department had several Special Operations teams working simultaneously throughout the county, according to Griffin.
"The Clayton County Police Department will not stand by and allow businesses to sell alcohol to our children," said Clayton County Police Chief Jeff Turner, in a written statement.
"We expect all businesses to comply with the letter of the law, and failure to do so will result in arrests being made, and business licenses being revoked," he said.
