Summit Racing to host 'Toys for Tots' benefit

Automobile enthusiasts, and others, are encouraged to bring their cars and their holiday spirit to McDonough, Saturday, to support a well-known charity geared toward children.

Summit Racing Equipment Retail Super Store, at 20 King Mill Road in McDonough, will host the fourth annual Santa Cruise for Toys for Tots, from noon to 4 p.m. Proceeds from the event, which is a partnership between Summit and the Southern Cruisers Car Club, will benefit the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program.

Gene Qualls, the manager of the Summit Racing Equipment store, said attendees can enter a vehicle in the event at a cost of $10, or by bringing a new, unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Tots.

According to Qualls, the charity event has been successful in Henry, and has demonstrated the generosity of local residents. "We had some people who came last year and couldn't be here this year, who already came by and dropped off some toys," said Qualls. "We're a very family-oriented company, and we understand that everybody has challenges that have to be addressed. We just want to do everything we can to support children in our local area."

Qualls said in addition to a car show, the Santa Cruise will include a raffle and giveaways of goodie bags for participants.

Summit Racing Equipment issued a written statement Wednesday, regarding Saturday's event. In the news release, the company's Retail Team Manager, David Lipinsky, described the "caring" nature of people who typically attend the Santa Cruise.

"Hot rodders are a tight-knit group, which includes a lot of very giving ... people," Lipinsky stated in the release. "When you give them an opportunity to gather and show off their rides for a great cause, they show up in big numbers to help out. That's why we're thrilled to host the Santa Cruise for Toys for Tots."

The Toys for Tots Foundation's web site provides details about the program, through which donations are collected each year from October to December. According to the web site, the endeavor has several goals, which are centered on helping children "experience the joy of Christmas."

"The objectives ... are ... to play an active role in the development of one of our nation's most valuable resources — our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future," the web site states.
