The Clayton County Superior and State courts have been awarded the Program of the Year Award by the Georgia Council of Court Administrators, for their Online Interpreter's Scheduling Program, according to Jamie Carlington, public relations officer for the Clayton County Board of Commissioners.

The program is an online scheduling tool that utilizes 17 languages in its application, according to Carlington. It offers attorneys, judges, and court staffers better accessibility to interpreters for non-English-speaking persons engaged in the judicial system within Clayton County, Carlington said.

"The application is accessible on a 24-hour basis, thereby ensuring that all matters are handled as quickly as possible, and that there exists an even greater degree of accountability for the court system," Carlington said in a written statement.

"I am appreciative that we received the support of both the State and Superior court judges in our efforts to make the courts more accessible, and improve some of our internal processes," said Clayton County Court Administrator Yolanda L. Lewis.

"It was their support, and the hard work of my staff, that made it possible for us to hold such an honorable distinction," she said.

This is the second consecutive year that the county courts have been recognized by the Georgia Council of Court Administrators, according to Carlington.

In 2008, the council recognized the Clayton court system for its development and implementation of the Clayton County Court and Community Access Program (CCAP), Carlington said.

The program serves as an outreach initiative with the county library system, and focuses on the improvement and accessibility of information available to self-represented litigants, she said.

On Tuesday, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners presented Lewis with a proclamation recognizing the Clayton County court system for receiving the Georgia Council of Court Administrators awards.
