Sharing Christ's love at Christmas - James C. Bell

This Christmas, I hope many will truly celebrate the precious Savior, Jesus Christ, giving Him honor and glory and His proper place in their lives.

At Christmas, we are supposed to observe the birthday of the Christ, who came to earth to seek and to save the lost, and to provide the only acceptable sacrifice for the sins of mankind.

He came to die on the cross for sinful humanity, to fulfill the will of God, the Father, so that all men, women and children who would believe in Him could be saved from sin and hell.

In this country, and in much of the world, we have commercialized Christmas to the point of almost missing the true significance of the holiday. Santa Claus and the idea of giving and getting gifts for Christmas is a huge business, and billions of dollars are spent at this time of year for frivolous and unneeded presents.

Some try to give gifts that are needed, but most of us do not have need of material things. Yet, this idea is so ingrained in our minds that we have a guilt trip and actually grieve if we cannot lavish "things" on each family member. I'm not saying Bah Humbug at Christmas, for it is a great time of year, and I enjoy giving and receiving gifts, but you must be honest: Do you really need the things you receive and give at Christmas?

This year, let's give a lot of love to our families, actually telling them we love them, and then enjoy some great fellowship together.

Let's give modest gifts and express our love to all. We should be sure to celebrate Christ's birthday in some significant and meaningful ways. I challenge you to put as much thought and expense into preparing for His birthday as you do for your family's Christmas.

This may prove to be difficult for all who accept the challenge, because what does one give to someone who really has everything! We can find a family who may be out of work and who have some real needs. Your local church, Salvation Army unit or homeless shelter would be able to point you to opportunities to give to folks in need.

Think how much enjoyment you and your family would have in helping some down-and-out family in your community. Plan to carry a great meal and presents to some needy family this year, and see what a great blessing Christmas can really be!

If you know of a family who will not have Christmas presents for children or adults this year, please share their names and addresses with us, and we will help them have a joyous Christmas. You may call us at (770) 603 PRAY and give the family's name and address, the names and ages of children, the number of adults and a phone number –– if any. Or, simply write this information on a card or letter and address to: Sharing Christ at Christmas, P.O. box 773, Jonesboro, Ga. 30237.

Jesus said, "A new command I give to you, that you love one another." We should plan to visit the church of our choice, one that teaches the Bible and honors Jesus Christ, and join in the worship service, thanking God for all our blessings and His unspeakable gift to us, His Son, Jesus Christ, who paid the price of our salvation with His very life!

What a great time to pray for our family members and to be sure each one is saved.

At our homes, as we celebrate Christmas –– Christ's birthday –– let's remember to read the story of His birth from the Bible, Luke 2:1-20. Perhaps, you are already a Christian, who loves the Lord, or maybe, you haven't made this great decision to accept Christ as your Savior.

Wouldn't it be a wonderful Christmas, if you accepted Him and His gift of Eternal life? I know it would be your best Christmas, ever. I'm praying for you!
