Clayton students to head back to school


Clayton County Public Schools students will return to class for the start of the spring semester of the 2009-2010 school year on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Classes will resume at Clayton State University, for the start of the spring semester, on Monday, Jan. 11.

The Clayton County Board of Education will hold its January 2010 business meeting on Jan. 11, starting at 5:30 p.m., at the Clayton County Public Schools Central Administration Complex, which is located at 1058 Fifth Ave., in Jonesboro.


The U.S. Air Force recently announced that Airman Ruben A. Alago, a 2005 graduate of Mt. Zion High School, has graduated from an eight-week basic military training course at Lackland Air Force Base, which is located in San Antonio, Texas. During his training, Alago studied military discipline; Air Force core values; physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Additionally, airmen earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force by completing basic training. Airman Alago is the son of Morrow resident, Emilcen Alago, and Atlanta resident, Roberto Alago.

The U.S. Navy recently announced that Seaman Janisia C. Mathews, a 2007 graduate of Morrow High School, has completed the eight-week U.S. Navy basic training course at the Navy's Recruit Training Command, which is located in Great Lakes, Ill. During her training, Mathews studied naval customs; first aid; firefighting; water safety and survival, and shipboard, as well as, aircraft safety. She also participated in "Battle Stations," which is an exercise in which recruits go through the practical application of basic Navy skills in a test of their senses of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance. Mathews is the daughter of Stockbridge resident, Annette Kelley.

Clayton State University officials recently announced that Jonesboro residents, Myesha Cottom; Andy Dakshina; Riverdale residents, Joshua Rochester and Jaigaye Spivey; Morrow residents, Ebone Richardson and Sherrie Eoff, and Ellenwood resident, Michelle Melton, received master's degrees in business administration (MBAs) from the school earlier this month. Jonesboro residents, Anna King, and Reda Rowell, also received master of arts degrees in liberal studies (MALS), according to the university.


The Clayton County Public Library system offers many services to students, including tutoring programs for those who speak either English or Spanish, and online practice tests and electronic test preparation books for the SAT, GED, ASVAB, and TOEFFL exams.
