The Internal Revenue Service Taxpayer Assistance Center in Atlanta will extend its hours two additional days this month to serve taxpayers who may be eligible for the earned-income tax credit.
The first additional day is Saturday. The second is Feb. 21.
"The extra days and hours are being added to the Atlanta IRS walk-in office's schedule to help potentially eligible taxpayers who may not be able to seek assistance during the work week," said IRS spokesman Mark Green.
The earned-income tax credit is a federal income tax credit for low- to moderate-income working individuals and families that Congress originally approved as legislation in 1975 to help offset the burden of Social Security taxes and provide an incentive to work.
Filing for the credit can result in a refund of more than $4,800 for some eligible taxpayers in metro Atlanta.
Taxpayers with incomes of $41,646 or less may be eligible to claim the credit, depending on their filing status.
IRS personnel are available in the regional IRS office, at 401 W. Peachtree St., Atlanta, to answer taxpayers' questions about the credit and help prepare returns claiming the credit.
The Atlanta IRS walk-in Taxpayer Assistance Center will be open from 9 a.m., to 2 p.m., Saturday and on Feb. 21.
There is a list of other IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers and offices statewide at the IRS web site, www.irs.gov/localcontacts. Taxpayers can also call 211, or 1-800-906-9887 for locations. Nationwide, there are more than 12,000 free tax assistance sites.
When going to the sites, taxpayers should be sure to bring the proper documentation, including valid driver's licenses or photo IDs, Social Security cards, income and benefits statements, dependent child care information, proof of an account at a financial institution for direct debit or deposit, and their prior year's tax return.
