Ola will send all 13 wrestlers to the Class AAAA Sectional Wrestling Tournament finals next Friday and Saturday after capturing the Area 4-AAAA championship title Saturday at Jonesboro.
Ten of Ola's 13 wrestlers competed in the championship finals with five wrestlers finishing first and five others taking runners-up positions. In six of the 14 weight divisions, Ola battled rival Alcovy for the finals with both teams splitting. Ola and Alcovy also had one consolation-round battle with Alcovy coming out the winner.
"It came down to Alcovy and us," Ola coach Anthony Partillo said after the victory. "We had a good battle. We beat them in the region duals earlier this year."
Ola finished with 204 points to win Saturday's area championships with Alcovy finishing second with 183 points.
"We're young but maturing at the right time," Partillo added. "We'll be taking the first and second seeds in most of the weight divisions next weekend (at Upson-Lee). That will put us in a very good position."
Charlie Smith improved to 47-11 by winning the 112-pound championship over Tyler Deloach of Stockbridge, 17-4; Tim Estrem finished first at 119 pounds by pin over Calvin Dallas of Alcovy; Zack Brown took top honors at 125 pounds by pin over Sha-Keno Jenkins of Stockbridge; Bryan Sorrows improved to 32-12 at 135 pounds with a win by pin over Julius Parris of Alcovy and Tim Feltman won at 171 pounds over Chandler Christian of Alcovy by pin.
Peyton Durflinger took second place at 103 pounds, losing in a tight 5-3 decision to Alcovy's Jonathan Seymour; Blake Sorrows took second at 140 pounds with a 8-4 loss to Travis Knight of Alcovy; Joseph Moore was pinned by Alcovy's Malash Outlaw at 152 pounds; Gun Nut was pinned by Mason Patten of Dutchtown at 189 pounds and Joey Carmen lost by referee's decision in a three-overtime thriller to Jonesboro's Michael Carlisle at 215 pounds.
Dustin Arnold finished third at 145 pounds, beating Tyler Coleman of Dutchtown, 6-3.
Bryce Haupt finished fourth at 130 pounds, losing to Miles Dewitt of Stockbridge, 13-2 and John Wilkins lost in a three-overtime thriller to Travis Gunnells of Alcovy, 6-4, at 160 pounds.
"We only have two senior starters (Haupt and Estrem), so I'm still very excited about our future," Partillo added.
Jonesboro's Octavian Stephens joined teammate Carlisle in the winner's circle, taking a hard-fought 13-9 win over Quintin Collins of Alcovy, raising his record to 39-7 in his senior year. He had pinned Collins earlier this season.
Dutchtown also had a second champion as Michael Canterbury joined Patten as area champion. Canterbury pinned Fabbion Anthony of Stockbridge at 160 pounds.
Michael Faison of Mt. Zion won the 285-pound title by pin over David Jones of Alcovy, raising his record to 42-3 in his senior year. He has done well coming back from a recent ankle injury.
Jonesboro's Giovonti Ortiz lost a tough 2-1 match to Alcovy's Adam Pollard in the 130-pound finals.
Dutchtown coach Jaison Lewis was pleased with his team, particularly his duo champions.
Canterbury improved to 28-18 in his junior year and improved from a second-place area finish last season.
Patton has greatly improved on his technique, according to his coach, as his strength was pivotal to his success last year.
