A Maryland woman faces federal drug smuggling charges after authorities say she tried to bring $1 million worth of heroin through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Zanada Moses, 24, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of importation of heroin and possession of heroin with intent to distribute, U.S. Attorney David Nahmias said Wednesday. Authorities say Moses landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Jan. 15 on a flight from Panama City, Panama. During a customs inspection, authorities found 2 pounds of suspected heroin, some of which was taped to Moses' stomach, and some hidden inside her body. Moses told authorities she was being paid $20,000 to bring the drugs into the U.S., Nahmias said. He said the drugs have an estimated street value of $1 million. Moses, who was being held Wednesday, is expected to be arraigned on the charges sometime this week or next. Her attorney, Thomas Hawker, said he will enter a not guilty plea. Nahmias said the charges carry a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison and a $4 million fine.More like this story
