Henry County leaders have scheduled five town hall meetings in March on property tax assessments.
Because of the economic downturn, homeowners who received tax bills may have questions about those bills, said Henry County Board of Assessors Chief Appraiser Kenneth Voss.
"This office is sensitive to the needs and concerns of the citizens during these difficult economic times, and we want to take a more proactive approach," Voss said in a prepared statement.
The meetings will begin with an update by Henry commissioners on county projects in their districts. Following the commissioners' updates, the chief appraiser will give a presentation on property assessments in Henry County.
During his presentation, he will explain the property assessment process and the laws guiding the process.
"We want citizens to know who we are, and ensure that they understand the process," Voss said.
Each meeting will include a question-and-answer period to address residents' concerns.
The district-specific projects will be updates on various Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax projects, said District I Commissioner Warren Holder.
Some of the projects in Holder's district include paving South Bethany Road, Collins Way, Collins Drive, and Mackey and Stallsworth roads, which are currently dirt roads. Another project in his district is intersection improvement work at King Mill Road and Ga. Highway 42.
The intersection improvements for Keys Ferry Street and Ga. Highway 81, and for Ga. 81 and Bethany Road, are joint projects between Districts I and III, Holder said.
Holder is not sure what to expect from the meetings, because no one has contacted him with specific concerns.
"I'm going to be prepared to answer anything I can," he said. "I don't know what the real concerns are at this point. I'll try to field any questions I can."
The District I meeting will be March 9 at 7 p.m., in the community room of the Henry County Administration Building, 140 Henry Parkway, McDonough. The meeting will be aired live on Henry TV14. It will be rebroadcast on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 11 a.m., 4 p.m., and 9 p.m., through March 31. It will also be available for viewing on demand on the county web site during the same time period
The District IV meeting will be March 10 at 7: 30 p.m., at the Merle Manders Conference Center, 111 Davis Road in Stockbridge.
The District V meeting is March 12 at 7 p.m., at the Fairview Public Library, 28 Austin Road, Stockbridge.
The District II meeting is March 19 at 7 p.m., at the Hampton Depot on East Main Street in Hampton.
