AirTran Airways' first international flight, a route from Atlanta to Cancun, Mexico, takes off today from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

"It's our first destination outside of the country for us, and the Caribbean is an important market during these economic times," said AirTran Public Relations Manager Judy Graham-Weaver.

The airline is hoping to take advantage of the peak of Caribbean travel season by launching the flight now, according to Graham-Weaver.

AirTran's hub is located at Hartsfield-Jackson. According to the airline's web site, round trips to Cancun will vary from $200 on discounted flights, to $788 on regular coach flights.

"It will depart everyday at 9:55 a.m., because it's a new flight, and we need to make sure it's a good route," said Quinnie Jenkins, corporate communications specialist for AirTran Airways. "And if it grows and demand grows, we will add more flights."

AirTran began flying Boeing 737 aircraft in 2004.

"We added the Boeing 737 because it gave us an option to fly international," Graham-Weaver said.

AirTran announced its intent to fly to Cancun Oct. 2.
