BOE will be trained for national search


The Clayton County Board of Education will hold a called board meeting on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 8 a.m., at the Professional Learning Center, 1087 Battle Creek Road, Jonesboro, to approve a bid for the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school that will be built in the county's panhandle region. The board will then immediately hold a training session, in which board members will learn how to conduct a search for a new superintendent, and how to deal with budgets.

Jan. 15

Clayton State University will commemorate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., with a program entitled "Remembering the King," on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 11:30 a.m., in the university's Lawson Amphitheater, next to Swan Lake and Spivey Hall.

Jan. 19

Clayton State University will hold its Seventh Annual Freedom Run 10K and 5K road races on Monday, Jan. 19, at 9 a.m., on the university's Morrow Campus. Race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m., in Clayton State's Athletics and Fitness Center. The cost will be $20. Runners registering before Jan. 11, will receive a discount rate of $15. Jan. 20

Clayton State University's Student Government Association will host a presidential inauguration viewing party on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 10 a.m., in the university's Student Activities Center, so the community can watch President-elect Barack Obama be sworn in as the 44th president of the United States.


Kathleen Elizabeth Stuart, of Jonesboro, was recently named to the Dean's List at Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland for the Fall 2008 semester. Students must earn a 3.5 grade-point average or higher to make the list.

The United States Army Reserve recently announced that Pfc. Jasmine C. Jones, a 2008 graduate of North Clayton High School, has graduated from a nine-week basic combat training course at Fort Jackson, in Columbia, S.C. During her training, Jones studied basic combat skills; military weapons; chemical warfare; rifle marksmanship; map reading; field tactics; the military justice system, and basic first aid. Jones is the daughter of Riverdale resident, Valesia B. Jones.


The Clayton County Public Library system offers many services to students, including tutoring programs for those who speak either English or Spanish, and online practice tests and electronic test preparation books for the SAT, GED, ASVAB, and TOEFFL exams.
