Pointe South Elementary School students will take to the basketball court today to help a needy member of the community.
For the fourth time in as many years, the elementary school will hold its "Ballin' for a Cause" charity basketball game at 6 p.m., at neighboring Pointe South Middle School, 8495 Thomas Road, Jonesboro. Students from the elementary school will take on students from Church Street Elementary School this year. Each year, a different student or community member who is facing adversity is selected to receive 100 percent of the proceeds from the game. This year, the school chose Mia Brown, a Jonesboro resident who wrote a play for Pointe South Elementary's theater group last year. The play was performed in April 2008, and Brown was diagnosed with cervical cancer five months later. Both teams will have cheerleaders, and Pointe South's step and drill teams will perform at the event. In addition to the game, there will be a silent auction featuring items such as tool boxes and jewelry, according to kindergarten teacher Jimmie Dukes, one of the event's coordinators. Admission to the game is $3 per person. The event traditionally draws hundreds of attendees, Dukes said. For more information, call (770) 473-2900. - Curt YeomansMore like this story
