Giveaway lures shoppers

Since last November, patrons of Super H Mart in Riverdale have been unable to avoid the shiny, 2009 Toyota Camry greeting them in the foyer.

On Super Bowl Sunday, after more than three months of raffle entries, the grocery store will conduct a drawing for the Toyota, as well as 972 other prizes, including notebook computers, a 42-inch plasma television, DVD players, and air purifiers.

The winning entries will be hand-drawn by passing shoppers, according to Sangbong Shim, the store's senior director of operations.

"Beginning [at] 1 p.m., this Sunday, many will gather at Super H Mart [in] Riverdale to participate in the drawing, and in an effort to keep the event completely customer driven, all the actual winners will be hand-picked by shoppers who come out to join the fun," Shim said in a written statement. He said families will also be able to enjoy free food samples and other perks.

Through an interpreter, Jae Won Choi, manager of the Riverdale store, said the drawing is part of Super H Mart's two-year anniversary in Riverdale. So far, he said, there are more than 200,000 entries in the giveaway.

"They come from other counties and other states as well," said Choi. "They like it ... they always ask us if they can have some more [tickets]."

Josette Jacinthe of Jonesboro said she has been shopping at Super H Mart since it opened in 2007. When the store had its grand-opening giveaway two years ago, she won a set of cooking pans.

This year, she wants the Toyota.

"It's a nice car," she said. "I have a Nissan Murano '05 and it's the same color. I could do a lot of things with it."

East Point resident Codjovi Agbossoumonde said he has been shopping at the store for the past eight months. Since the contest started, he has entered all of his immediate family members.

"If I win this car, I don't know how it could improve my life," he said.

Choi said the contest is about marketing and showing appreciation for the store's customers.

"If there are no customers, there is no Super H Mart," he said. "Since we came into Clayton County, a lot of people don't know about H Mart yet. We're trying to let them know that we are here and that we appreciate them."
