Virginia Rose Fifield

Virginia Rose Fifield, 90, of Riverdale, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, July 3, at 11 a.m., at St. Phillips Benizi Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

A long-time resident of Riverdale, Virginia Fifield was a homemaker. She loved bowling with the Clayton County Senior Bowling League. She is survived by one daughter, Kathleen Gaskin (Sam), of Powder Springs; four sons, James (Carol) Fifield, of Newnan, Dennis (Marilyn) Fifield, of Conyers, Keith Fifield, of Newnan, Kevin (Jorie) Fifield, of Columbus; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. U.S. Army Retired Gerald Fifield, and 10 brothers and sisters. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 2, from 5 p.m., to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Horis A. Ward, Tara Chapel, (770) 471-7171.

Sheila Yvonne Petty

Mrs. Sheila Yvonne Petty, of Riverdale, passed away on June 30, 2009. Mrs. Petty was a long-time residence of Riverdale and was retired from Bellsouth. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Thursday, July 2, in the chapel of Horis A. Ward-Tara Chapel Funeral Home, with Pastor James Cannon officiating. Interment will follow in Riverview Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Petty is survived by her husband, Robert Petty; 3 Daughters, Debbie Pridmore, Connie (John) Dean, and Lisa (Rick) Ditroia; 2 sons, Robert, Jr., and Tony Petty; 7 grandchildren, Michael, Christopher and Matthew Dean, Michelle and James Eckerson, Jennifer Ballard and Jake Pridmore; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Tommy and Richard Bray; her beloved pets (Babies).

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Horis A. Ward -Tara Chapel.

Billy R. "Buddy" Nail

Billy R. "Buddy" Nail, Ph.D, of McDonough, passed away June 30, 2009.

Dr. Nail was born in Roby, Texas, the son of the late Helen Juanita Parker and Radney Harmon Nail. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Hardin Simmons University; his M.A., and Ph.D in Mathematics in 1962 and 1967.

He retired as a Professor Emeritus in 1995, and as a former Dean of Clayton State College. He served as President of the Georgia Division of the American Cancer Society during the mid-1980's, and has been an ordained Baptist Deacon since 1957. He taught Sunday School for most of his adult life.

Dr. Nail was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, and a Wednesday Morning Coffee Group. His love was being with his family, serving in his church, working on the computer, teaching and sharing his sense of humor. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Marion N. Crowder.

Survivors are his wife of 57 years, Glenda C. Nail, of McDonough; daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha Baker, of Washington, D.C., Vicky N. and Dennis Palmer, of Winston Salem, N.C., Penny S. and Gary Kelley, of McDonough; grandchildren, Natalie Preston (Dru), Jay Holbrook (Lauryn), Ryan Kelley (Megan), Chris Holbrook (Jessica), and Rachel Moore (Rob); 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Bonita A Martin (Coy), of Lubbock, Texas; sister-in-law, Pat Stanton (Jay), of Lubbock, Texas, brother-in-law, J. T. Campbell, Jr., of Dallas, Texas; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Friday, July 3, at 1 p.m., at Bethany Baptist Church, with the Rev. Al O'Quinn officiating. Interment will be at Haisten/Eastlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
