Used gadgets to benefit cancer fight

The American Cancer Society is seeking donations of used electronic gadgets as part of a new fund-raising effort.

The group is collecting used cell phones, digital cameras, laptop computers, game systems and iPods. Donations will benefit the Relay for Life, and the fight against cancer, the American Cancer Society said.

Lisa Miller, an administrative assistant for the group, said volunteers proposed the idea for the donation project. She said she anticipates the effort will follow in the footsteps of previous similar efforts.

"With the way our economy is, a lot of people don't have money but they do have cell phones and other items lying around that they're not using," she said. "We thought this would be a great way to fund-raise."

The items can be brought to the American Cancer Society office in Peachtree City, at 301 Kelly Drive, Suite 3, between the hours of 9 a.m., and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Donations will be taken through Aug. 31.

The cut-off date may be extended later, Miller said. She said more drop-off points may also be announced in the near future, if local groups wish to participate in the project.
