Shooting suspect faces murder charge

A Jonesboro man who allegedly shot another man during a basketball game last week faces a murder charge.

The incident occurred May 27, just before 7 p.m., at a home on Channing Drive in Jonesboro, according to Clayton County Police. Police say Jamal Clements, 24, shot Samual Johnson, 22, of Jonesboro, in the head while playing basketball. Johnson was transported to Southern Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at midnight, according to authorities.

Witnesses told police Clements pulled the pistol from his pants pocket, according to court records.

Several witnesses observed the shooting which occurred for "unknown reasons," according to court records.

Police said Clements barricaded himself inside his nearby Yarmouth Drive home but later surrendered to SWAT team members.

Clements is charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, according to court documents. He is being held without bond in the Clayton County Jail.

It was not clear whether Clements is represented by an attorney. Court records indicate he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 18, and a bond hearing on June 19.
