Charlie J. Flowers
Charlie J. Flowers, 91, of McDonough passed away Monday, June 8, 2009. Mr. Flowers was born in Mitchell County, Ga., to the late William Henry Flowers and Elizabeth Wadsworth Flowers. Charlie served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was involved in the invasion of Okinawa, Japan. Mr. Flowers was retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 20 years of service. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Marie Elizabeth Searcy Flowers.
Charlie is survived by his sons, Charles Richard Flowers, Sr., of McDonough, Thomas Randall Flowers of Acworth; grandchildren, Donna Flowers, Cynthia Cross, Kellie Dodgen, Charles R. Flowers, Jr., Karla Avery, and Hope Flowers; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 11, at 11 a.m., in Ward's Tara Chapel. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Jonesboro. Mrs. Agnes Mitchell, age 85, of Jonesboro passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2009. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Molly (Wes) Cottingham, Frank (Deborah) Mitchell, Vickie (Sandy) Hair, Steve (Lisa) Mitchell; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Roger Oakes, Alvin Oakes; sister, Martha Daniel; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 11, at 1 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro Worship Center. She will be placed in state one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Irvin Pearre will officiate. Interment will be at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 10, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Thomas Carroll McBrayer, Sr.
Thomas Carroll McBrayer, Sr., age 82, of Jonesboro passed away on June 3, 2009, at Southwest Christian Care in Union City. Carroll was born Dec. 16, 1926 to Lewis Samuel and Katie Lewis McBrayer. His step-mother was Berta Holbrook McBrayer. Carroll graduated from Tech High in 1944, and entered the U.S. Navy, training to be a tail-gunner on the PB4Y-2 (Privateer). Following his discharge in 1946, he worked for Western Electric throughout Georgia, and from Chicago to Miami. He later operated clothing stores in Jonesboro and Forest Park and worked at Walter R. Thomas Jewelers. He also attended the Atlanta division of the University of Georgia (now Georgia State University.)
Carroll joined Delta Air Lines in 1957, beginning as a mechanic in the Instrument Shop. He always took great pride in being part of the "Delta family" and spent most of his 30 years in the facilities operations division. After retirement in 1987, Carroll directed his time into being a grandparent, muscadine wine-maker, tomato grower and backyard gardener who once grafted a plum limb onto a peach tree that bore both fruits. He and Dorothy, enjoyed escaping to Pike County for the peace and quiet of "the country."
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Stephens McBrayer, Carroll is survived by sons, Tom McBrayer (Peggy) of Peachtree City, and Sam McBrayer of Jonesboro; grandchildren, Michael and Megan McBrayer; brothers, Dan McBrayer (Diane) and Jack McBrayer; brother-in-law, Jack Stephens of Jonesboro; cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Jonesboro First United Methodist Church, 142 South Main St., Jonesboro, on Saturday, June 13, at 11 a.m., with visitation at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Southwest Christian Care, 7225 Lester Road, Union City, Ga., 30291, or to the Jonesboro First United Methodist Church.
