In an effort to better brand its services, the Clayton County Parks and Recreation Department is calling on the community to design a logo capturing the essence of the programs and services the department provides.
The Parks and Recreation Department's Logo Competition is taking place from now until March 31. The department's staff will accept logo submissions from people of all ages until the end of month and residents will be able to judge the top entries throughout the month of April by voting on the department's web site.
Detrick Stanford, director of Clayton County Parks and Recreation, said the last time the department reached out to the community for help designing a logo was shortly after the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games when the county took over operation of Clayton County International Park. He said the effort eventually led to creation of the "The Beach" logo and "Diggs the Dog," the official mascot of International Park.
Stanford believes a logo for the department will foster a sense of identity and make it easier for residents to locate park resources.
"The first logo for the Beach was to just try to promote International Park," said Stanford. "Now we are trying to create a logo to help identify parks and recreation as a whole. One of the things that constituents have expressed to us is that it is difficult to tell the difference between government-owned recreation and privately-owned recreation areas. If we could have this universal look throughout our parks and recreation centers, then everyone can identify with that as a unit."
The new logo will be used as an advertising tool for the department and will be prominently displayed on the county's web site, letterhead, brochures, and T-shirts. Stanford said the logo would also be displayed throughout its park system and related properties, such as Reynolds Nature Preserve in Morrow, the Gerald Matthews Sports Complex in Lovejoy, the Frank Bailey, J. Charley Griswell, and Wilma W. Shelnutt senior centers, and International Park itself.
Lindsey DeLong, marketing and sales specialist for the department, said the contest has been going on since the end of December last year. She said that due to a recent jump in entry submissions, the department decided to the extend the entry deadline from Feb. 27 to March 31.
"That particular week of the submission deadline, we received a lot of entries, so we felt like they needed another month," DeLong said. "We really wanted to include everybody ... we're looking for that one symbol that, when you see it, says this is Clayton County Parks and Recreation."
DeLong said the department had received entries from 16 people as of Tuesday. All designs should measure three inches by three inches and can be submitted on unlined white paper, illustration board, or as a PDF or JPEG file.
Designs can be hand-drawn or drawn on a computer, but the use of clip art or any other computer-generated image is strictly prohibited. Multiple entries must be submitted together.
