Suspect named in
Forest Park shooting

Clayton County Police have identified a suspect in a fatal Mother's Day shooting at an area apartment complex.

Russell James Carpenter, 23, is wanted in the shooting death of Chavez Denard Watson, 25, of Forest Park, according to Clayton County Police spokeswoman Lt. Rebecca Brown.

The incident happened May 10, just before 11:30 a.m., outside building 46 at the Laurel Pointe Apartments, located at 225 Johnson Road, Brown said.

"Carpenter assaulted a juvenile, then shot and killed Chavez Watson," Brown said in a press statement. "Carpenter fled the scene and is believed to be in another state," she said.

Police said Watson was shot in the torso and forearm, and was transported to Southern Regional Medical Center for treatment, where he later died.

Warrants for murder and aggravated assault have been issued for Carpenter, according to Brown.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (404) 577-8477.
