The often quiet streets of downtown Hampton may soon see heavy traffic.

The Dixie Highway Cruise In car shows begins tonight, and run through August.

According to information provided by Patti Battle, director of the Hampton Main Street program, the car shows will be the fourth Thursday of each month, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Tickets to the events will be $1 each, said James Campbell, one of the events' organizers.

The shows are sponsored by East Main Collectibles, Speedway Donuts, and Campbell's Customs, and are held to encourage more people to come to the downtown area, Campbell said.

Participants in the shows, he said, may register their vehicles at East Main Collectibles. There will be no registration fee, and the first 10 car owners to register their vehicles will get a bag containing various gift items like T-shirts and hats.

"You just don't know what's going to be in those bags," said Campbell.

Car show participants will cruise up and down Main Street, and park their vehicles in front of various downtown businesses, he said.

The Hampton Police Department will lend its support and be on hand to help with traffic flow as needed, the event organizer continued.

Campbell said the cars will be judged, and the judges will select the top three entries.

All types of vehicles will be on hand, he said, and there are no strict requirements for the winning car to meet.

"It's going to be the judges' favorites," said Campbell. "You might have an old junker the judges just love."

The events will also feature a "50-50 drawing," he said. A "50-50 drawing," explained Campbell, is when ticket sales are tallied up at the end of each evening, and the winning ticket holder receives 50 percent of the proceeds.

"I've seen 50-50 drawings as high as $1,000," he said.

The events will also include music, said Campbell, and local merchants will offer specials to customers visiting their stores.

The shows will be held rain or shine, he added.
