Lee Street Elementary School and the Eula Wilborn Ponds Perry Center for Learning (also known as the Perry Learning Center) in Jonesboro were placed on lockdown for two hours Thursday morning, while Jonesboro police investigated allegations that a weapon may have been on the grounds of the Perry Learning Center.
Clayton County Public Schools Spokesperson Charles White said the Perry Learning Center was placed on full lockdown around 8 a.m., and students who were arriving for school were "diverted to a safe location until an all-clear was given."
Lee Street Elementary School, which is across the street from the Perry Learning Center, was placed on a "soft lockdown" as a precaution, White said.
School officials and police began a staged return of students to the Perry Learning Center campus shortly after 9 a.m., and the facility was placed on a "soft lockdown" at 9:30 a.m.
No weapon was ever found, White said, and the lockdown was lifted at 10 a.m. He added that officials at the Perry Learning Center, which includes the Elite Scholars Academy Charter School, the district's Open Campus High School, and adult education programs, were going to send a letter home with students, explaining the situation to parents.
