Georgia Archives to host book sale

By Curt Yeomans

Used books on a variety of topics, including genealogy, foreign languages, art, sports and cooking, will be sold at the Georgia Archives today through Saturday.

Even 250 old yearbooks, from local colleges and middle and high schools, will carry "For Sale" signs this weekend.

The Friends of Georgia Archives and History (FOGAH) will kick off its annual Used and Rare Book Sale tonight, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with a "Members Only" preview event at the archives, which is located at 5800 Jonesboro Road, in Morrow. The sale will include a selection of 25,000 book and magazine titles.

Despite the name of tonight's preview event, book sale Co-Chairperson Dee Thompson said anyone is welcome to the unveiling of the book sale -- provided they become a FOGAH member upon arriving at the preview event.

"All they have to do is pay $20 [for an individual membership], and they'll get first dibs on all of the books available for sale," Thompson said. "We have a great selection of books for people to choose from."

The book sale will be open to non-members of FOGAH on Friday and Saturday, from 9 a.m., to 4:30 p.m., each day. Proceeds from the sale will be used to support the archives' school programs, and preservation efforts, Thompson said.

"FOGAH solely exists so that they don't have to give up their programs in the schools, or cut back in any way, their efforts to preserve historical documents," Thompson said.

Thompson said she and other book sale organizers wanted to make the books affordable for local residents. Therefore, the majority of books will be sold for less than $5, with many of them carrying price tags of less than $3, she said.

There will also be a special deal taking place at 12 p.m., on Saturday, Thompson said.

"We will do a level-top box special," Thompson said. "We will provide the boxes, and people will be able to get as many books as will fit in the box for $15, provided the box can be closed with a level top."
