Charity run set for Hampton park

A charity athletic event scheduled for next week is intended to fight hunger locally, and promote community involvement.

Hampton residents, John and Renee Pollard, are organizing a 5K Run and Walk Canned Food Drive Dec. 5, at 8 a.m., at North Mt. Carmel Park, at 307 North Mt. Carmel Road, in Hampton. The event will benefit a local food pantry, in McDonough.

Renee Pollard said the endeavor is part of the couple's desire to make a positive impact in the area.

"We want to get more active in the community, and give back," she said. "A lot of people want to donate [food], but don't know how. We want to help people in the community for the holidays."

Participants in the run, she added, will embark on a 3.1-mile trek through the park. She said that in addition to generating food donations through the event, the couple hopes to encourage area residents to take a more active role in the community.

The cost to register for the run is $15 through the end of November, and $20 Dec. 1 through Dec. 5. Those registering must also bring two canned-good items. Participants will receive a snack, a T-shirt and water.

Renee Pollard said prospective runners can pre-register beginning at 7 a.m., on the day of the event.
