We should honor the name of God

One's name is important, it identifies him or her, his or her family and heritage -- and carries with it a strong sense of who one is.

I have one good friend who says that a person's name not only speaks of who he is, but also of his character and integrity. A person's good name is linked to his reputation, his history, accomplishments and to his merits.

The Bible says in Proverbs 22:1: "A good name is more desirable than great riches."

One's name describes to those who know him who he is and what he stands for in life.

Did you know the name of God gives us a description of Him and often tells us who He is, and about His attributes? The name of Jehovah is the name of the independent being -"I Am Who I Am." This name only belongs to Jehovah God.

We must honor and bless His Holy Name. We fall down in fear and awe and worship Him in spirit and in truth. (See Exodus 3:13-15.) God is Jehovah-M-Kaddesh, which means He is "the God who sanctifies."

He is separate from all that is evil and requires that the people who follow Him be cleansed from all evil. God is Jehovah-jireh. This name means "the God who provides." He provides for our salvation through His beloved Son Jesus Christ; He provides our todays and tomorrows. He provides guidance for our every-day life and forgiveness for our sins.

He is Jehovah-shalom, which means "the God of peace." He is the perfect, unfailing peace. (See Judges 6:16-24.)

I am forever grateful that He is Jehovah-rophe, which means "Jehovah heals," because He blessed me personally with His healing of my acute leukemia. Praise His Holy Name, only God has the remedy for the healing of mankind. The gospel is concerned with the physical, moral, and spiritual healing of all people. (Exodus 15: 22-26.)

God is Jehovah-nissi. This name means "God our Banner." He is the one who leads us to victory through the lord Jesus Christ. God is El-Shaddai. This name means "God Almighty." It is God who is all sufficient and all-bountiful, the source of all blessings, fullness, and fruitfulness. (See Genesis 49:22-26.)

God is Adonai, meaning "Master" or "Lord." God calls all His people to acknowledge themselves as His servants, recognizing His right to command them as the Lord of their lives. (See 2nd Samuel 7:18-20.)

Finally, God is Elohim. This name means "Strength" or "Power." He is transcendent, mighty, and strong. Elohim is the great name of God, signifying supreme power, sovereignty, and a covenant relationship that He is ever faithful to keep. (See Genesis 17:7, 8.)

We are indebted to the following sources for this material: "The Knowledge of the Holy," by A.W. Tozer; "Names of God," by Nathan Stone, and "God of Glory," by Kenneth Landon. Assembled by The Navigators.

I trust you will agree we should honor these great names of God. The best way to do this, in my opinion, is to believe in Him through His Son Jesus Christ and to live by His teachings.

As we follow Him in our walk through life, we will find He is ever teaching us to love and serve others. As He leads, we find our minds and abilities are expanding and growing. We realize some of the most difficult things we do for Him have become easy and fully understood. We find it easier to love and help those in need.

While we were not willing to witness for Jesus before, now is an opportunity we seek and pray for; we are willing to go anywhere to serve Him.

Our compensation for serving Him is the joy of knowing we are being used of Him to share the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who are spiritually lost. Our blessing is seeing people accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

If you are not a Christian now, I pray you will soon choose Jesus Christ as your Lord.
