A Lovejoy High School senior became a mother last week when she gave birth to a child, in a school bathroom.
School System Spokesman Charles White confirmed that the birth of the child occurred in the morning during the school day. School officials were alerted to the matter that morning, White said. After the child was born, officials put the new mother and her family, in touch with a social worker, and made arrangements for family counseling, White said. White could not confirm whether administrators learned of the birth while it was happening, or afterward. He also could not specify the gender of the newborn, or the age of the mother. He said the student, and her newborn child, were transported by ambulance to Southern Regional Hospital for a check-up. White said the mother and child are reportedly "doing OK," although he could not confirm whether the mother had returned to school. - Curt YeomansMore like this story
