The Georgia Department of Transportation is accepting applications for the 2009 "GATEway Grant" program. The deadline is Oct. 30. Applicants should mail the application to the Georgia Department of Transportation Landscape Architecture Section, 600 West Peachtree St. N.W., 10th floor, Atlanta. The grant is used toward purchasing and installing plant material on state routes in community landscape projects located on public roads. Applicants who are eligible to apply for a grant of up to $50,000 include any organization, local government, or state agency. The Genealogical Society of Henry and Clayton Counties, Inc., will host genealogy classes every Monday night, until Nov. 9, from 6:30 p.m., to 8:30 p.m., at the Brown House, 71 Macon St., McDonough. The cost per class is $20 for non-members, and $15 for members. Patrons should send their checks, which must contain their name, phone number, e-mail address and their class selections by Oct. 2. Arts Clayton will host an, opening reception and awards ceremony, for the "6th Annual Juried Photography Show & Competition," on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 5:30 p.m., to 7:30 p.m., at the Arts Clayton Gallery, 136 South Main St., Jonesboro. The City of Lovejoy will have its free, "PINK RIBBON Breakfast," on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m., to noon, at the Lovejoy Community Center, 11622 Hastings Bridge Road, Hampton. This event will raise awareness of early detection, and encourage women to get their annual breast examinations. Participants must pre-register to attend the event. The Southern Crescent Chorale, will have a concert entitled, "A Night in Old Vienna," on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m., at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center, Peachtree City. The gala will begin with a cocktail hour, cash bar, followed by a dinner, a brief chorale concert, and dancing. Gala tickets are available at a cost of $100 per person. The Clayton County Alzheimer's Support Services, Inc., will have a, "Bingo Night," on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m., at the Alzheimer's Services Center, 6701 Highway 85, Riverdale. The cost of the fund-raising event is $6, for three tickets, and $11, for six tickets. Oct. 15

The Clayton County Chamber of Commerce will host "The 4th Annual Showcase Clayton" on Oct. 15, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the community center of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 7102 Mt. Zion Blvd., Jonesboro. The event will provide opportunities for businesses to exhibit their products and services, and network with the public. Oct. 17

The City of Forest Park Recreation & Leisure Services will hold its Autumn in the Park festival on Oct. 17, from 10:30 a.m., to 5:30 p.m., at Starr Park. Admission is free. The Delta Air Transport Heritage Museum will host its annual, "Atlanta Airline Collectibles Show & Sale," on Oct. 17, from 9 a.m., to 4 p.m., at the Delta Air Transport Heritage Museum, 1060 Delta Blvd., Building B, Department 914, Atlanta. Vendors will be selling items related to aviation, such as airplane seats, aircraft models and playing cards. Admission is $5 per adult. Kaiser Permanente will have a "Flu Shot Saturday," on, Oct. 17, from 8:30 a.m., to 12:30 p.m., at the Southwood Medical Center, 2400 Mt. Zion Parkway, Jonesboro. The flu shots will be free for all Kaiser Permanente members. Truett's Grill will have a "Fall Festival," as part of its customer appreciation week, on Oct. 17, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Morrow location, 2042 Mt. Zion Road. Oct. 21

The Knights of Columbus, Tara Council, will host its, "37th Annual Clayton County Public Safety Appreciation Luncheon," on Oct. 21, from 11:30 a.m., to 1:30 p.m., at the council hall, of the Tara Council 6352 of the Knights of Columbus, 481 Flint River Road, Jonesboro. The Knights of Columbus will be providing lunch to police, fire fighters, emergency medical technicians and 911 personnel. Oct. 22

Dauset Trails Nature Center will have a day camp for adults during its "A Day at Dauset," event, on Oct. 29, from 10 a.m., to 5 p.m., at Dauset Trails Nature Center, 360 Mt. Vernon Road, Jackson. Clayton County Parks and Recreation presents, "Lights on Afterschool," on Oct. 22, from 4:30 p.m., to 7:30 p.m., at Lee Street Park, 140 Smith St., Jonesboro. The purpose of this event is to educate the community about the importance of after-school programs. The event will provide participants with food, games and arts and crafts. Oct. 23

State Rep. Mike Glanton (D-Ellenwood), and Clayton County Tax Commissioner Terry Baskin, will host the third annual Clayton County Business Community "Business2Business" Bowling Tournament 2009 on Oct. 23, at 6 p.m., at the Pin Strikes Entertainment Center, 3478 Mt. Zion Road, Stockbridge. Registration is $300 per team, and there must be five members per team, with three females and two males, or vice versa. Participants must be 21 years of age, or older. The Clayton County Alzheimer's Support Services, Inc., will have a, "Spa Day," on Oct. 31, from 11 a.m., to 2 p.m., at the Clayton County Alzheimer's Support Services, Inc., 6701 Highway 85, Riverdale. The fund-raising event will provide patrons with a skin analysis, facial, make up, paraffin hand treatment, foot massage, back massage and light refreshments. Nov. 5

The University of Georgia College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Cooperative Extension Service of Clayton County, will have a Clayton County Master Gardener Symposium, entitled, "The Plant Lover's Garden," on Nov. 7, from 9 a.m., to 4 p.m., at Eula Ponds Perry Learning Center, 137 Spring St., Jonesboro. The American Cancer Society in Clayton County is in need of volunteers for its "Road to Recovery" program to drive cancer patients, to and from, their cancer treatments. Free training is provided. In order to volunteer, individuals must have a good driving record, a valid driver's license, automobile insurance and a vehicle that operates well.
