Richard Ross Shafer
Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Richard Ross Shafer, age 66, of Jonesboro, passed away Oct. 3, 2009, as a result of injuries sustained while racing in a SCCA hill climb.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Zenas and Iris Shafer, and his brother, John Shafer.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen Burch Shafer of Jonesboro; son, Thomas Richard Shafer and wife, Mindy, of Atlanta; daughter, Julie Christine Shafer of Maui; sister, Susan Slaght of Illinois; grandchildren, Duncan Thomas Shafer and Lincoln Davis Shafer; numerous nieces and nephews; many friends and his SCCA racing group.
Rich was the owner and founder of Shafer Enterprises/Cool Shirt, which has grown from a basement business to an international distributor of personal cooling systems. He also has been a past president of the Lost Valley Homeowners Association, active in SCCA racing as well as many other organizations. After attending college in Chicago, he completed officer-candidate school and proudly served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant. Rich was full of life and always looking forward to the future. He welcomed a challenge and believed that anything is possible. His love for his wife, family and friends was evident to all. Rich truly lived life to the fullest and will be greatly missed.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m., at Christ Our Hope Lutheran Church, 2165 Ga. Highway 138, Riverdale, Ga., 30296. Pastor Jeffrey Halenza will officiate. A reception will be held after the service at the church.
