Running for the first time in two weeks, the Clayton State Laker men's cross country team got its final tune-up for the upcoming Peach Belt Conference championships on Saturday with a convincing victory at the Southern Challenge.
Behind a stellar performance by junior Fidelis Mutiso, the Lakers ran away from the rest of the nine-team field with 18 points. Georgia College finished second with 60 points, followed by Chattahoochee Tech with 111, Tennessee Wesleyan with 118 and Oglethorpe had 124 points to round out the Top Five.
Clayton State garnered six Top 10 finishes amongst its eight runners. Mutiso led the way with his first individual victory of the season, finishing the 8K event in 28:01.8. Junior Joey Chino placed a close second in 28:34.4, while Stephen Bowers placed fourth in 29:00.7 and Ezra Mutai finished fifth in 29:33.5.
Rounding out the Clayton State Top 10 scoring was freshman Aryton Azcue finishing seventh in 30:25.3, and Jarrid Casimir finished ninth in 30:42.7. Other finishers for the Lakers included Ricky Fort placing 19th in 32:02.4, and Cesar Valdovino placing 24th in 32:27.
Clayton State competes next in the 2009 Peach Belt Conference championships in Lumberton, N.C. on Oct. 24.
