Life South says need for blood urgent

There is an urgent need for all types of blood, according to officials of the Life South Blood Center.

Life South is responding to the need by holding a blood-drive event, called "Doggie Donor Day," on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m., to 4 p.m., at the Southern Crescent Donor Center, which is located at 329 Westridge Parkway in McDonough.

"One unit of blood saves three lives," said Community Development Coordinator Michael Becker. "That's what drives me to give."

Blood donors participating in "Doggie Donor Day" will receive a recognition item and a complimentary cholesterol screening. Donors must be 17 years old, or older, but 16-year-olds may donate blood, with written parental consent.

Donors must weigh 110 pounds, or more, and present photo identification before donating blood, according to a Life South news release.

Refreshments will be served at the event and a variety of activities are scheduled, including a Pet-adoption Day, face painting, dog sitting for donors with appointments, a doggie costume contest and Doggie toe-nail painting.
