Margaret Phillips Gilbert

Margaret Phillips Gilbert, of Forest Park, passed away Oct. 22, 2009 at Southwest Christian Hospice.

She was born Sept. 18, 1923 to Henry Key and Winnie Orr Phillips of Forest Park. Mrs. Gilbert was married to the late James Royal Gilbert of Stockbridge for more than 53 years.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, L. Eugene Phillips, James Phillips, Harry Key Phillips and wife Shirley Hamby Phillips, all of Forest Park.

She is survived by her son, James Phillips Gilbert (Melanie Carithers Gilbert); grandchildren, Katherine "Katie" Malone Gilbert and James Micah Gilbert of Luella; sister, Janet Phillips Wright (wife of the late G.L. Wright) of Decatur; brother, Jack Phillips (Dianne Pope Phillips) of Griffin; sisters-in-law, Anne Stone Phillips of Forest Park, and Nancy Phillips Collins of Jasper, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Gilbert spent the entirety of her life in the Clayton County area where she was born, raised and worked. She attended the First Baptist Church of Forest Park her entire life and was a member for 71 years. She served in several capacities throughout her years there, but close to her heart was her ministry to special-needs children for over 30 years. It was the unconditional love and acceptance of these special-needs friends that touched her heart most deeply.

In 1970, she and her brother, Jack Phillips, co-founded Clayton Floor and Wallcovering, a business that is still serving the community today. It was through this work that she reached out to the community in a professional and caring manner.
