Members of Curves of Stockbridge are renewing their support for the annual "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" fund-raiser benefiting the American Cancer Society.

This is the fourth year the women's fitness club has taken part in the 5K walk event, according to the club's owner, Loretta Eskew.

Curves of Stockbridge is part of Curves International, an American Cancer Society partner that participates each year in both the Relay for Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer charities.

Eskew said last year's 11-member Curves of Stockbridge walking team collected $1,450 of the $410,000 raised by 610 teams nationwide for cancer research. This year's team goal, she said, is to raise $3,000.

"We want to help invest in the development of research for a cure for cancer," Eskew said. "This is all about a team effort. Each one of us can give something small, and as a group, it becomes large."

Eskew said organizers of the club's team will start this weekend planning for this year's fund-raising event, on Oct. 24 at 7 a.m., at Atlantic Station in Midtown Atlanta.

"Making Strides is such an important event for us," Eskew said. "So many people are touched by breast cancer in some way, and this is a great opportunity for us to come together, as a community, and do something about it."

Eskew said the Curves of Stockbridge walking team already has commitments from nine club and community members, but is hoping to have more walkers join from the community.

"It's exciting to know that we're not just participating with the members in our own community, but with other Curves owners and their members across the country as well," Eskew added.
