The Clayton County Republican Party will host Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, and gubernatorial hopeful, John Oxendine, Thursday, during its regular monthly meeting.
Oxendine will meet with the public in the Morrow Municipal Complex Community Room starting at 6 p.m.
Clayton County GOP Chairman Della Ashley said that Oxendine will be the first Republican gubernatorial candidate the organization has hosted this year. She said the party hosted Republican Secretary of State Candidate Doug MacGinnite over the summer ,and hosted Stephen Northington, a Rebpulican cadidate for state insurance and safety fire commissioner, last Saturday.
"I think he is one of the stronger candidates, at least in some of the early polls," Ashley said of Oxendine. "He is the state insurance commissioner, and he has generally had a good reputation. In general, he has had the years of experience in the state. That should allow him to be able to negotiate around the state on different issues that might come up as governor."
Thursday's meeting is "just for people to get to know them [Republican candidates], especially Republicans in the area, but anybody who is interested," Ashley added. "People can come to the meetings, even if they aren't Republican."
According to Oxendine's web site, he was first elected Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner on Nov. 8, 1994. He has since won three consecutive elections and is now serving in his fourth term.
In addition to his duties as insurance and safety fire commissioner, Oxendine is also the state's industrial loan commissioner and comptroller general. According to his web site, his duties include regulating approximately 1,600 insurance companies, licensing 137,000 insurance agents, and regulating more than 1,000 industrial loan offices.
