Joseph Roy Baker, Sr.

Joseph Roy Baker, Sr., age 70, of Hampton, formerly a longtime resident of Jonesboro, died Sept. 19, 2009. He was a practicing attorney for over 40 years and was a graduate in the top 10 of the United States Naval Academy class of 1962. He also was very involved with the Boy Scouts and enjoyed a love for music, particularly woodwind instruments and Native-American flutes.

He is survived by his children, Elizabeth A. Baker, Joseph "Joe Bird" and Lisa Baker, Emily A. Baker, Amy Baker, Benjamin "Foss" Baker; grandchildren, Megan, Madison and Sarah Baker.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 25 in the Jonesboro Chapel of Pope Dickson & Son, with Dr. Jack Farrar and the Rev. Tom Shannon officiating. Melissa Maureen Illingworth Davis

Melissa Maureen Illingworth Davis, 37, of Rowlett, Texas, died Sept. 23, 2009. Mrs. Davis worked for the Clayton News Daily, the Newnan Times-Herald and Dallas Morning News. She was a 1989 graduate of Fayette County High School where she sang in the chorus. She was an animal lover and loved to travel.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Sandra Illingworth.

She is survived by her husband of eight years, Cullen Jefferson Davis, Jr., of Rowlett, Texas; father, Thomas B. Illingworth of Fayetteville; and in-laws, Cullen J., and Donna Davis, Sr., of Rowlett, Texas.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m., at the Catholic Church of St. Gabriel with Fr. Mike McWhorter officiating. The burial will follow at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home, with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m.

John Edmund Dumas, Jr.

John Edmund Dumas, Jr., age 48, of Atlanta, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009 at his home. He is the son of John, Sr., and Janice Day Dumas, of Jonesboro and Hillsboro, Ga.

He is survived by his parents, his sisters, Jamice Meschke (Paul) of St. Simons Island and Laney Wood of McDonough; nephews, Paul Meschke, Jr., of Brunswick, Ben Wood of Statesboro; niece, Lacey Wood of Macon. He left two faithful companions, his dogs, Yodi and Frito, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

John was born on Aug. 10, 1961 in Atlanta. He was a 1980 graduate of Woodward Academy in College Park, where he was on the wrestling team. He attended Auburn University and graduated in 1985 with a degree in building construction. He was vice president of the family business, Southeastern Roof Decks, Inc. Along with his church, he did mission work in a Russian orphanage and participated in the church league.

John was an avid hunter and fisherman, an adventurous camper and traveler. He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend.

The family will receive friends and family from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 25 at Jordan Funeral Home, 264 Hillsboro Street, Monticello, Ga., 31064. The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Hillsboro Baptist Church, 2326 Hwy 11S, Hillsboro, Ga., 31038 and burial will be held in the Dumas family cemetery in Hillsboro. Pastor Phillip Gilbert will officiate. Serving as pallbearers will be Sidney Dumas, Scotty Dumas, Paul Meschke, Jr., Ben Wood, Barry Wood and Jimmy Dumas.
