Spring break means plenty of baseball for local squads

Spring break often times means trips to the beach, or some other getaway with family and friends.

Unless you play baseball for one of the local high school teams.

Then next week will be filled with players shagging fly balls, stealing bases, fielding routine grounders and pitchers and batters trying outwork each other.

Such is the life of high school baseball players and coaches, especially when the season is about to heat up with key region games.

Ola high school might have the busiest schedule of all. The Mustangs, who were ranked No. 2 in the Class AAAA poll this week, but may drop a spot or two after falling to No. 5-ranked Alcovy, play games on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

North Clayton might have the wackiest schedule of all, as it plays two region games on Tuesday against Ola at Alcovy.

The holiday baseball feast gets underway Saturday as Union Grove hits the road for a game at Eagle Landing. The first pitch will be thrown at noon.

Also, today, three-time defending champion Wesleyan travels to ELCA for a game against the Chargers. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

Two long-time rivals also clash today on the baseball diamond when Lovejoy travels to Mt. Zion for a 2 p.m. start.

The rest of the week looks like this:

Monday features several spring-break clashes including a noon start as Forest Park plays at No.-2-ranked Ola in a Region 4-AAAA contest.

Also on Monday, North Clayton takes on Dutchtown (5:30 p.m.) Stockbridge plays at Jonesboro (5:30), Luella entertains East Coweta (6 p.m.) and

Rutland plays at Woodland (5:30).

Union Grove takes its game on the road Monday for a doubleheader with Warner Robins.

The first game starts at 4:30 and first-year baseball program Locust Grove plays at Woodward Academy (5:30).

Things don't cool down on Tuesday either as local teams keep the base paths warm in day No. 2 of spring break.

North Clayton's home game against Ola starts at 11 a.m. and the Eagles play at Alcovy at 5:30.

Tuesday's other game features Luella traveling to Druid Hills (4 p.m).

On Wednesday, Stockbridge plays at Dutchtown (5:30), Jackson takes on Locust Grove (6), Forest Park plays at Mt. Zion (noon), Griffin plays at Ola (5:30) and Eagle's Landing travels to Rutland (4:30)

On Thursday, ELCA, which is ranked fourth in the Class A poll, plays in a high school tournament in Florida.

Baseball action continues on Friday as Jonesboro plays at Dutchtown (5:30), Alcovy comes to town to meet Stockbridge (5:30) and Woodland plays Woodward Academy (5:30)
