Spivey Hall hosting auditions for children's choir

There are only a few more days to sign-up for the upcoming Spivey Hall Children's Choir auditions, according to an official with the choir program.

Carol Abarr, the general manager for the choir, said people interested in auditioning must send her their identification and contact information by Tuesday, April 27, to schedule an audition time. The deadline had originally been Friday, but Abarr said she is extending it a few days because she still has several available spots.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there were 40 audition spots left to be filled, she said.

The Spivey Hall Children's Choir program is made up of 180 youths, between the ages of 10 and 18, and is broken up into three choirs, including a Tour Choir, the actual Children's Choir, and the Spivey Hall Young Artists.

"If all you've ever done is hear about the choir, then you need to come hear it at one of its performances," Abarr said. "It is an amazing program, and the performances are incredible."

The auditions will be held from 9:30 a.m., to 12:30 p.m., and from 1:30 p.m., to 5 p.m., on May 1, according to a news release from Clayton State University, on whose Morrow campus Spivey Hall is located. The auditions will be held at Spivey Hall, according to the release.

The auditions are open to youths from across the metropolitan Atlanta area, who will be between the ages of 10 and 13, on Sept. 1, Abarr said. She said the choir is only accepting younger children for training purposes.

"Once they are in the program, they can stay in it until they are 18, but we get them early, because we need to get their voices trained," Abarr said. "The boys in the choir, for example, can keep singing in the upper registers as they get older, and their voices begin to change, because we've trained them at a young age to do that.

"If you haven't begun training them before their voices change, though, then you've lost your opportunity."

Abarr said because it is so close to the deadline to apply for an audition spot, people can either call her, or send her an e-mail, with the identification and contact information for the child who will be auditioning. She can be reached by phone at (770) 946-9072, or by e-mail at info@shcc-tc.com.

The general manager said the information she will need, in order to schedule an audition, includes: The child's name; date of birth; gender; age as of Sept. 1 of this year; their county of residence; parents' names; the school the youth will be attending in the fall; the grade the child will be enrolled in, in the fall; home phone number, and the child's and/or parent's e-mail address.

When the youths show up for their auditions, they will need to bring completed teacher recommendation forms, using only the forms that are provided by Spivey Hall, Abarr said. The children will audition with Spivey Hall Children's Choir directors Craig Hurley and Martha Shaw, according to the choir's general manager.

Abarr said the auditioning children will do some scales and some vocal exercises, to demonstrate their tone and pitch quality. The youths will also be required to sing the first verse of "My Country, ‘Tis of Thee," she said.
