According to Sheriff Gene Pope, Henry County Police Officer James Carter, Jr. died in a car crash last Wednesday night after his vehicle ran off Keys Ferry Road and hit a tree.
Pope said Carter was traveling to work around 9:30 p.m. and slick road conditions caused him to run off the right-hand shoulder.
"[Carter] must have over compensated and then struck a tree as a result," Pope said.
Pope said Carter was killed instantly.
Carter was a Jasper County resident.
