Senior Center offers fun at Spring Fling

By Diane Glidewell

The Butts County Senior Center continued an expanded schedule of spring activities with a Spring Fling party from noon until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21. All senior citizens in the community were invited to join the celebration of the end of the winter doldrums with music, dancing, games, food, prizes, games, and karaoke.

Guests were asked to bring their favorite appetizer or dessert to share, and everything else from punch to decorations was provided for their entertainment at the Senior Center at 576 Ernest Biles Drive in Jackson. A good group turned out to enjoy the Spring Fling.

Singers Jessi Jaymes and Kevin Haley were present to bring their familiar vocal numbers and high-charged energy to the party. They had the guests on their feet for the twist, the Macarena, a clogging number and a few less physically demanding numbers. Jessi urged her audience to grab a chair for support while dancing, dance on one leg, or dance seated; she accepted no excuses for not joining the action.

"Put your hand on your hip and let your backbone slip," called out one Macarena dancer. Karaoke ranged from "Harper Valley PTA" to "You Are My Sunshine."

Senior Activities Director Jane Welchel expressed appreciation to Ingles, American Mills, Jackson Drugs, Big D Discount Drugs, Piggly Wiggly, and Jackson Pizza Hut for their contributions to the party, including several prized gift cards and a beautiful quilt from American Mills.

If you missed the Spring Fling, or if you enjoyed it and are ready for more, circle Wednesday, May 5 from noon to 3 p.m. for the Senior Cinco de Mayo celebration. Jessi and Kevin will be back with more music and fun, and there are sure to be more games, prizes, and surprises. Remember to bring your favorite Mexican appetizer or desert for everyone to sample.

On May 12, the Senior group will be visiting the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Museum from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The trip is $12 per person, and reservations are required by May 3. 770-775-8228.
