A woman was shot and killed on Monday afternoon at a Delta Technical Operations Center, at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to a public information officer for the Clayton County Police Department.
Lt. Tina Daniel said shots were allegedly fired by two parties. She said she could not give further information about the parties involved, due to a pending investigation.
Shots were exchanged in an officer-involved shooting, "in a standard operating procedure," according to Daniel, who said she could not elaborate on the details of the shooting.
The police department received a call about the incident at approximately 1:30 p.m., said Daniel. The incident occurred at the operations center, located at 1775 Aviation Blvd., Atlanta, she said.
The woman was there to speak with an employee of the operations center, with whom she was in a relationship, said the lieutenant. The woman had a handgun in her possession, Daniel said.
The employee was not at work when the incident occurred, according to Daniel. She said it is unclear how the woman was able to get through the gate with her vehicle.
"All we can say is [it is] possible family violence," said Daniel about the incident.
Daniel said she could not immediately release the name or description of the woman, because notification of the next of kin had not been completed.
The incident did not affect operations at Hartsfield-Jackson, she added.
"Delta [Air Lines] is cooperating with authorities in their investigation of what appears to be a domestic situation involving a shooting that occurred near the Delta Technical Operations Center security entrance," Daniel said.
"No Delta employees were injured in this incident," said Susan Elliott, senior manager of media relations for Delta Air Lines, in a written statement. "As part of Delta's Employee Assistance Program, confidential and free counseling is available for all Delta employees," said Elliott.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is also investigating the case, Daniel said.
