Clayton State ranked ninth in preseason tennis poll

From Staff Reports

When the Clayton State Laker women's tennis team hits the court for the 2011 season, it will do so as a national Division II Top 10 program.

Clayton State is ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II preseason Top 50 poll. This is the highest preseason ranking ever for Clayton State in women's tennis. The Lakers were ranked 10th in the preseason each of the last two seasons.

Clayton State is coming off arguably the best season in program history last season. The Lakers finished 18-8 overall, advancing to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship finals and the NCAA Division II "Sweet 16" for the second time in program history.

Clayton State is one of seven teams ranked nationally in the Peach Belt. Defending NCAA Division II Armstrong Atlantic is the top-ranked team, while Columbus State is ranked 11th, Francis Marion is ranked 14th and Flagler is ranked 16th. Augusta State (29th) and Georgia College (30th) rounded out the nationally-ranked PBC teams.

Individually, the Lakers have two players nationally ranked in both singles and doubles. Seniors Katie White and Viktoriya Semyrodenko are both ranked nationally in singles and in doubles. White is ranked 16th in singles, and Semyrodenko is ranked 33rd. In doubles, Semyrodenko and sophomore Ivan Krommelova are ranked eighth in the nation, and White and junior Marie Cercelletti are ranked 15th.

Clayton State opens the 2010-11 season – the first under new head coach LeTrone' Mason – on Feb. 12 at home against Shorter.
